The origin of the tequeños of Venezuela

Rafael Cartay, professor of history of socio-anthropology of food, Technical University of Manabi. in Ecuador. He refers to tequeños as 'a cylindrical appetizer or appetizer that houses a semi-hard cheese bar inside and is wrapped in wheat flour dough.

It seems that at first they were called in a descriptive way: 'cheese rolls' and it was later when they were named 'tequeños'.

The name comes from 'Los Teques' a city in the state of Miranda in Venezuela, founded in colonial times. The Caribe Teques Indian tribe lived in this territory.

There is not a single theory about the origin of this recipe but several:

In colonial times in Venezuela (from the mid-16th century to 1810), the employees of wealthy landowners made their own dough for bread. From the remains of the dough, they made tequeños with cheese wrapped in dough.

Another hypothesis, in the 20th century, a family from Los Teques with the surname Báez created this recipe. The 'tequeños' thing ended up being called apparently for an anecdotal reason.

In Caracas they transported these snacks from a station called 'El Encanto' to another called 'Caño Amarillo'. When the Báez family showed up, people eagerly waiting to try these cheesy appetizers would say, “The Tequeños are coming!”, alluding to the origin of this family.

Another third version tells that the tequeños were created in Villa del Rosario in the state of Zulia, northwest of Venezuela and bordering the Caribbean Sea, about the creator according to this hypothesis it is only known that he was a citizen of Italian origin living in Venezuela.
