Cáritas Ibiza yesterday presented its first Fashion Re- social and solidarity economy store, which will be officially opened this Saturday. This project, which is committed to a space for sustainable consumption by reusing second-hand goods, pursues the employment of people at risk of social exclusion. This was explained yesterday, during the presentation of the premises, the head of communication for this project, Raisa del Campo.
In addition, Del Campo yesterday made a brief review of the stages derived from this textile process. "In Moda Re- we carry out the comprehensive management of used clothing (collection, classification, reuse, recycling, social donation and sale), by collecting second-hand clothing and footwear in the different containers that we have distributed throughout Spain", said the head of communication. 6,200 containers
In total, Caritas has distributed more than 6,200 containers, responsible for supplying 120 Moda Re- stores. In this sense, Del Campo pointed out that once the clothes arrive at the industrial plants, the garments are sanitized before they are classified. "They have to pass several quality filters before they are put up for sale," she pointed out.
Likewise, he stressed that nothing is wasted in Cáritas, since what cannot be sold is recycled. "What we do is break down the garments into their raw materials and use them as thermal or acoustic insulators," she stressed. A process that, according to Del Campo, is possible thanks to new technology that allows the material of the garment to be analyzed in a few seconds. "This technique makes it possible to create new products from these raw materials," she says. She also explained what the buying process will be like at the Moda Re store. “Both the users of Cáritas and the rest of the neighbors, if they wish, will be able to have a guarantee from Cáritas that will allow them to buy in the store,” she stressed.
In a matter of minutes, the place began to fill with neighbors, social workers, political representatives and authorities. No one wanted to miss this act of solidarity. Among the authorities, the figure of the new bishop of Ibiza and Formentera, Vicente Ribas Prats who, after blessing the opening of the premises, pointed out that Cáritas has been working on this initiative for some time.
“With this project we are dignifying people. Without a doubt, it is a very important step for reintegration into the labor market”, explained Vicente Ribas Prats. For his part, the island director of Social Welfare, Santi Marí, made a harsh criticism of consumerism and pointed out that it is time, as a society, to face this new stage, after the pandemic, and "live with a social conscience."
Meanwhile, several neighbors contemplated the different garments already hanging in the store. "This work will allow many families, without means, to have an opportunity in the labor market," said neighbor Teresa Vega.
